We are becoming a UNICEF UK Rights Respecting School!
Garelochhead PS aims to be a school where children’s rights are at the heart of our ethos and culture, to improve well-being and to develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential. As part of this plan we are working towards recognition as a ‘Rights Respecting School’, an award given to schools on behalf of Unicef UK. Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and young people and their rights. In 1989, governments across the world agreed that all children have the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential. Pupils will learn about their rights by putting them into practice every day. A Rights Respecting School models rights and respect in all its relationships. We really hope that you will be able to support our school on our journey towards becoming a Unicef UK Rights Respecting School. The Garelochhead Guardians have some big news to share. We’ll give you a clue…

We are now a Silver Award Rights Respecting School!
Here’s what one of our Garelochhead Guardians, Amber, had to say, “Recently we won our Silver Award and we are planning a celebration for our whole school. We are going to have a huge extra playtime for everyone! We are going to tell everyone in an assembly and we are going to try and give each class something silver.”
Another Garelochhead Guardian, James, tells us a little bit about what they had to do for the final accreditation visit.
“Back in January, we all had to go into a meeting with the UNCRC people. We were sitting around a table and they were on the screen on a video call. There was 8 of us in the meeting and Mrs Guy but she wasn’t allowed to speak. We were all feeling a bit nervous. They asked if we learned about our rights at school and what rights we knew. They also asked about how safe we feel at school and who we can talk to if we have any problems.”
The children soon settled in and had lots to say! Our assessors were very impressed. Well done everyone!
Garelochhead Guardians - June 2024 Update
Our first ever Garelochhead Guardians had their final meeting of the academic year on Wednesday! They have had such a busy two terms helping us to gain the Bronze Award for Rights Respecting Schools and getting well underway with our work towards Silver. Well done everyone!
Here is a brief update on some of the ways the steering group has been busy this term:
- We attended the Rights Respecting Symposium at Rhu Primary School and shared what we have been doing with lots of other local school (see picture below) as well as getting lots of ideas and advice from the other steering groups present
- We organised beach or local area cleans for all the classes to help us in looking after our local environment (Article 24)
- Our Article of the Month in June was Article 31 - The right to rest, play, culture and arts. Our Health Week features lots of activities which linked with this article.
- We delivered an assembly to the whole school about the ABCDEs of children's rights. After this, each class helped to make a letter for our whole school display to showcase their learning!
It has been a busy term and our Garelochhead Guardians have worked incredibly hard! We will be looking to elect new members to the steering group after the summer holidays.

Mrs Guy would like to say a massive WELL DONE for all your hard work this academic year!
